No to co - "Nikifor"

Nikifor is a beloved folk painter/outsider artist from Poland. He lived in a mountain town in Southern Poland called Krynica Zdrój, which is famous for having many types of mineral water and historically was (and still is) a hugely popular health resort town. They still bottle and sell the water. There is a pijalnia there where you can try all the different types of water; I think there are about 8. Some are so sulfurous it was impossible to drink them. He lived there his whole life, sometimes homeless, sleeping in the trunk where he kept all of his things. He used to sell his paintings on the streets of Krynica. Yet another reason I feel robbed for not living in the first half of the 20th century is the fact that now these paintings are hugely expensive, where as then I could have just bought one off the street. I think he was like 4 foot 5. This song is talking about his paintings: clouds moving lazily through the sky, singing angels, skinny little streets disappearing into the horizon, cathedrals made of colourful bricks, their spires rising, green forests on the mountains, streams, rivers, and church bells ringing and ringing.

Jardino - DYW (Musi Musique, 2024)

Groups of people singing in harmony will forever be one of my favourite musical motifs. Work and pastoral songs, doo-wop, choral and other religious musics, Księżyc and on. I’m there for it and couldn’t not be there for Jardino, first heard on a Sunday afternoon. I hit play and had to stop everything else I was doing just to sit and soak it all in.

The trio mix novel interpretations of traditional French and Italian polyphony with charming outtakes and interludes suffused in sounds of laughter and bird song. Country things. These notational, diaristic markers adding little bursts of texture that tread as light and welcome as the sparse instrumentation peeking around corners throughout. Each voice is heard and not heard. They come together askew. Grassy scents seeping through.

Feels like this album deserves a whole interview or essay as it triangulates research, praxis, female friendship, from-the-vault, folk histories, alt-musicology. At once so rich and humble. 5 stars.

Asthyna at Knockdown Center (November 23, 2019)

Bookworms and Via App collaborate as Asthyna. They hurl huge orbs of sound back and forth, knead, rest, enter each fold and turn there. Via App hovers over the table of gear, steps back, and leans in nodding like a coach or trainer, or baker, seeing something nurtured rise. Bookworms hunkers down like a scientist, or spider, leaning into a deep hunch. And a final sprint through drum-and-bassy acres.

DeForrest Brown, Jr. at SPR (Mar 7, 2019)

Equipped with an iPad and a body gyrating like liquid mercury DeForrest Brown, Jr. confronts the stage with an intensity and intention akin to Dreamcrusher, Death Grips, and Yves Tumor. His recent performance at SPR presented unrelentingly drum-heavy noise patterns punctuated by torn vocal outbursts and improvisational dance that developed angles as from bones made of silicone. I was inclined to try to twitch my body in time with the very fastest rhythms, which easily outstripped me. I watched another attendee slowly sway to what she later described as „swinging bass.” She said, „It’s sexy.” And it was. Near the end of the set, jazzy winds swelled forth, tensed, burst, and curled like a deflating balloon as he collapsed from the knees with arching back. A bend of love, of hate.

Can we please stop writing about music in this way thank you

Screenshot that reads spaces. Dusty breaks, queasy drill-bass, bit-crushed trap hi-hats, shuffling trip-hop drums and autotune-drenched vocals swirl together in a heady sonic palette that draws as much influence

Theodore Cale Schafer's "Slacker" (2021)

Most of the daytime we were sitting at the table, cups and saucers scattered, red berries, some squashed…Me kind of working (slacking), “I’ve liked being here today with you.” Or it could also be slices of still-warm cake by candlelight—we each make the same one to eat at some time and share the taste across distance. Cold coffee from the morning finished by the light of a fading afternoon. Some closeness, tendered, like I could curl up inside of the soft skin of an open arm now, figmently, kind of impatiently, aimlessly, unsure who came before.

Aimed to make something that emulates the experience of hearing many sounds sources at once, say, you are playing music off the computer, but also have the radio on, and the window is open and you hear the music being played in cars driving by, plus your neighbours doing whatever they are doing through the wall and maybe even the sounds and voices pinging around in our thoughts as we drift in and out of concentration. How this all interacts in an overwhelming, noisy way and falls in and out of sync.

I ""recorded"" the bulk of it in one go with a bunch of different browser tabs. I had some idea of the things I wanted to play but didn't really set out too strict of a plan. So there are some mistakes! But I think all the mistakes are quite beautiful...and also align with my wanting to make a mix that was not so composed, messy, kind of staticky sound and a free-handedness distinct from that of djs or...'sound narrators'.

A desire to build something around works for strings that have been on my mind for years now. Almost as long as I have known you. Again thoughts, dreams of future. And steeping in the cyclic, sublime, always wanting to play of the long, long game. Threaded through some attempt at grounding (voice, street trumpeter, the buzz and tickle of a space heater clicking on): the constant text buzz and crash that fills this seeping space between now and away. You might be me. I mean, I feel that my heart is vibrating in the middle of my body.

Songs that make me think about a beautiful place out in the country, but which country? And "I wish we were Hansel and Gretel with pebbles as a hedge against the day before and the day after." Poetry falls into the tricks of its music. The line curls slackened or either strains and snaps. It's kind of messy because that's harmony. Love, that universe of the universal chance.

"It was kind of fascinating how it created this really immersive world that you would have to keep checking back to see if anything had been added or updated; and there were a lot of easter eggs, as well. But it's this idea I haven't seen duplicated, or at least not successfully, to create this really active website that is just like a fiction you can be lost in and become a fan of. I've been thinking about this as well lately--this kind of site that you have to go to frequently doesn't exist anymore, really. There's Twitter, Facebook, Instagram; we go there often to check our feeds but it's not the same as going to a specific URL that is giving you a channel, a consistent world"

Winter 2020: 'Untitled 2' by Gem Vision from Space Heater (self-released? 2010?)

Natalia 17 Untitled 2

I recently moved house and parsed through all of my things. To treasure or to toss? I uncovered an old usb drive filled with music from 2009-2013. I remembered each track but not every artist. Most files didn't have metadata attached but this one did: Space Heater by Gem Vision. This album doesn't seem to exist online anymore, only other fossils. I also had Lynx at some point and remember this song fondly. Felt like putting this back into the fray, lately.
